Troop 174 General InformationOur Troop
(中文簡介請點這裡) 1. Troop 174 has been in existence since the 1950s. During this time, over 200 scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Nationally, less than 5% of those who begin scouting achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Earning this rank is an extremely prestigious accomplishment and something for which each scout and family should be very proud. 2. We are currently sponsored by the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Temple City. 3. We are an active troop that focuses on outdoor activities, particularly camping and backpacking. We feel that this type of program offers our young men the best in scouting. We typically schedule one (1) weekend activity each month. 4. Generally, our troop activities are broken up into 3 “seasons.” January to May is our camping and skill development season. May to August is our hiking and backpacking season. September to December we offer a number of family activities, functions, and outings, as well as our Survival Campout. 5. Historically we attend Cherry Valley Boy Scout Summer camp on Catalina Island during a week in early July. In August, for the boys and adults who qualify, we do a week long high Sierra backpacking trip. Both of these activities are well attended and supervised by trained and qualified adult leaders. 6. Our meetings and most activities are run by the boys. The Senior Patrol Leader is in charge of the troop meetings and Patrol Leaders are in charge of patrol meetings. When a new scout joins the troop, the more experienced boys will help to guide and teach him. As he progresses, he will eventually develop into a leader and have a chance to guide and teach young scouts himself. 7. Our adult leaders act as counselors and advisors to the boys while working in the background to maintain the framework and infrastructure of the troop. We work to provide growth opportunities for our boys while allowing them to work within the parameters to organize, plan and run programming on their own. 8. Each scout, upon joining the troop, will be assigned to a patrol. Patrols are smaller groups of scouts within the troop. Typically 5-8 members will make up a patrol which is led by a patrol leader, who is a scout that has 3-4 years of experience as a Boy Scout and has shown an ability to lead. Note to Parents: Please feel free to ask any and all the question you want. We have all been in your shoes and understand that there are a lot of things to learn. Some of these things you will learn as you go. There are other things we can help you with as you get started. We welcome you to Troop 174 and look forward to being part of your scout’s growth and development. |
